There are only a few nation-wide supermarkets in the UK. Every British person could name five or six. In the USA, there are a few chain owners, but all over the country there are local supermarket chains that are not owned by any of the big players.

For every Walmart that the British public gets to hear about, there's a DeMoulas Market Basket which operates in an area with the population of Sussex. I genuinely don't understand how the pure capitalism of the USA allows small chains to survive un-gobbled. And these small chains often offer reasonable value for money - in fact my in-laws claim that Market Basket is cheaper than the other competitors around here (I don't agree, but it's certainly a very close run-thing).
But what I also don't understand, is why Tesco and the like try to come to the USA by starting a new chain, or why when they do, they don't do what Aldi did with Trader Joes. But why don't they come and buy Market Basket and the others?

What I really wanted to write about, though, was the supermarkets' methods of engaging customers. In the UK the Nectar card or the Tesco Clubcard is the hook to get you to come back. But in the US is lots of irritating pieces of paper posted into every mailbox around the country offering discounts that no Brit would bother to read. Again, what is going on!?
Also, "Market Basket" doesn't sound ridiculous to Americans because they pronounce the two words differently, but to a South East English accent, it's hilarious!
